Earthly mortals are gearing up this festive season for a heavenly combat. Kolkata Puja Pandals are jostling for the (G) spot that is the (G)reat Awards Spot!
It was around 6 in the morning yesterday. Morning Pandal Hoppers were fewer in numbers. I was sipping away my blues with my morning quota of tea. I was watching the birds fly when my eyes struck gold.
A rag-picking mother was carrying a huge sack in one hand and her baby on another side of her shoulders. She was finding it hard to do both the tricks smoothly. However her daily gold was not to be left by. The last night’s pandal hoppers had left a lot of plastic bags, plethora of wastes (which would see her through for some weeks, adding to her daily wage) so the struggling mother pulled up her kid and did some more picking up.
This was my Durga Puja 2009. I have had a great conflict filled Puja where there is a lot of imbalance of sorts in our damned society.
My personal and universal has also been in a state of conflict. I am in a state of lull before the storm. Waiting for some kind of fresh wind to sweep me off my discomposure. “Maa Durga” has somewhat started acting deaf to my words/prayers!
